The Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists was founded in
1976 by a group of professional African-American journalists to:
* Encourage and support aspiring black journalists
* Recognize and honor outstanding journalistic achievement within the black community
* Encourage fair and effective coverage of the black community
* Provide information about employment and related opportunities to GSLABJ members
* Better acquaint members of the black community with ways to make effective use of the media
* Link journalists and communicators of varied disciplines
GSLABJ benefits members and the community through:
* The Minority Journalism Workshop, a free, eight-Saturday program for high-school students and college freshmen
* Annual scholarships for aspiring college students
* Mentoring for students
* Media forums and other events for the public
